Telluride via Black Bear Pass From the summit of Red Mountain Pass you quickly begin your accent through alpine meadows surrounded by cliff sides and waterfalls, with panoramic views of the Red Mountains to the east and Mt. Sneffels to the north. Once at the top you will wind your way down through the lush Mineral Basin. As you decent to the more thrilling section of the trail into Ingram Basin you will pass the remains of the Black Bear Mine and get your first view of Telluride more than 2,000 ft below. The thrill comes as you make your way over the famous "steps" and traverse the spectacular hairpin turns and narrow switchbacks that are etched into the Western slope of Ingram Peak. Once in Telluride you will have time to enjoy some lunch and visit some of the amenities of this cozy small town. On the return trip you will head up Savage Basin, past the site of the Tomboy Mine as you make your way up to the 13,114 ft summit of Imogene Pass. The second highest driveable pass in the state, offering incomparable views and excitement as you meander you way back to Ouray.
